The season of international Karate opens from January 10 to 12 in Tbilisi (Georgia) where the opening Karate 1-Series A event of the year will take place. Here’s all you need to know about the anticipated tournament.
WHAT
- The Karate 1-Series A Tbilisi is the first event of the 2025 season. It initiates a much-anticipated season of Karaste’s open series of events.
- After Tbilisi, the 2025 Karate 1-Series A will travel to Larnaca (Cyprus), Salzburg (Austria) and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).
WHERE
- The tournament will be held at the New Sports Palace of Tbilisi.
- It is the second time that Georgia host a major Karate event. The country welcomed the successful 2024 EKF Cadet, Junior & U21 Championships.
WHEN
- The event is scheduled from January 10 to 12.
- The first day of competition on Friday will comprise of the categories of Male and Female Kata, Female Kumite +68kg and Male Kumite +84kg.
- The second day on Saturday will have the categories of Male and Female Team Kata, Female Kumite -50kg and -55kg, and Male Kumite -60kg and -67kg taking the stage.
- The third day on Sunday will put the highlight of the categories of Female Kumite -61kg and -67kg, and Male Kumite -75kg and -84kg.
- The Finals and Bronze medals will be held at the end of each competition day.

WHO
- Over 1100 athletes from 87 countries have registered to participate in the event.
- This tally continues the participation records at the Karate 1-Series A tournaments. An average of 942 athletes from 73 countries participated in the 2024 Karate 1-Series A.
- The powerhouse nation of Iran presents the largest delegation, with 146 athletes. Leading countries of Turkiye and Italy also compete with a large number of competitors, 112 and 86 athletes, respectively.
HOW
- The Karate 1-Series A events are limited to competitors who are placed in positions 33 and below in the WKF World Ranking.
- Athletes are free to register as long as the total number of 96 competitors per category in Kumite and 128 entries in Kata is completed.
- The tournament follows a knockout competition system.
WHAT ELSE
- Competitors participating in the Karate 1-Series A events aim to earn points to reach the top 32 positions in the WKF World Ranking, which gives them the chance to compete in the Karate 1-Premier League.
