The WKF Development Programme concluded its season with the celebration of the successful event of the UFAK West Region 2 Championships, held in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. The event brought together nearly 300 participants, underscoring the growing popularity and impact of karate in Africa.
As the cornerstone of WKF’s efforts to enhance karate’s reach and infrastructure across Africa, the Development Programme has consistently delivered meaningful progress. Throughout 2024, the programme continued to strengthen the sport’s structures on the continent, ensuring greater access, improved organization, and increased participation at all levels.
In collaboration with WKF, the UFAK held a series of key tournaments this year, including events in all the regions across Africa, the UFAK Cadet, Junior & U21 Championships in Tunis, and the African Games in Accra. These initiatives have significantly advanced the quality and scope of karate competitions, providing athletes with opportunities to showcase their talents on a larger stage.
WKF President Antonio Espinós said:
“Karate’s progress in Africa has been remarkable. Through the combined efforts of UFAK and the WKF, we have seen a clear improvement in the organization and quality of events across the continent. Karate’s tremendous popularity in Africa, especially among the youth, continues to inspire us to push forward. The WKF remains committed to supporting the growth of karate in Africa, ensuring that the level of events continues improving”.
“I want to especially praise the work and efforts of UFAK President Souleymane Gaye and Vice-president Bechir Cherif. Without them, nothing of this would have been possible.”
The UFAK West Region 2 Championships in Abidjan event marked a fitting end to an exceptional year for karate in Africa. Nearly 300 participants, including 172 athletes from four countries took part in the event, demonstrating their skills and dedication to the sport.
