The Women’s Commission of the World Karate Federation (WKF) has taken significant steps towards enhancing female representation and influence within karate. Following the 2024 World Cadet, Junior & U21 Championships in Venice-Jesolo, the commission led by Chairperson Sarah Wennerstrom (Sweden), with members Fariba Madani (USA) and Rosanna Kassis (Australia), conducted several meetings to expand opportunities and increase the number of women in key karate roles.
At the event in Venice-Jesolo, the Commission conducted its ordinary meeting to review strategies to bolster the presence of women in various positions within the sport. The discussion underscored the WKF's commitment to an inclusive karate environment that supports growth and fair representation across genders.
Following the meeting, the Commission held a dedicated conference for female leaders in karate, including National Federation Presidents, Referees, and other key officials. This WKF initiative fosters collaboration and further supports women's karate development, with discussions centred on joint efforts among national and continental federations. The aim was to design strategies for increasing the number of female referees, coaches, and officials, reinforcing the WKF’s ongoing commitment to gender equality.
WKF President Antonio Espinós said:
“I am grateful to our Women’s Commission for their steadfast commitment to ensuring that women in karate can thrive on and off the tatami. Karate, as a fully inclusive sport, strives to set a global standard for gender equality, as demonstrated by impactful programs like the Guardian Girls Karate initiative and the advancements led by our Women’s Commission.
“Our goal is to make karate a benchmark in sports equality, promoting progress for all. Through these efforts, the WKF continues to affirm its dedication to creating an equal and inclusive environment, where women are encouraged to succeed in all aspects of karate.”
