Day 2 of the PKF Senior Championships Crowns New Continental Champions

The second day of the 2024 PKF Senior Championships in Punta del Este, Uruguay, saw six new champions being crowned, showcasing a high level of skill and competition. Favourites Thomas Scott and Vinicius Figueira and first-timers Hana Furumoto-Deshaies and Juan Camilo Fernandez were among the winners of the day. Here’s a recap of the day's highlights:

Thomas Scott Reclaims -75 kg Title

Thomas Scott of the United States triumphed in the Male Kumite -75 kg category, defeating Matias Rodriguez of Chile with a score of 8-4. Scott, who last held the title in 2022, celebrated his seventh continental championship, reasserting his dominance in the category.

 

Claudymar Garces Wins -61 kg Category

In the Female Kumite -61 kg category, Claudymar Garces of Venezuela emerged victorious over Natalia Bernal of Colombia. The match ended 2-2, marking Garces’ best result after securing silver in the 2022 championships.

 

Vinicius Figueira Secures Third Title in -67 kg Division

Vinicius Figueira of Brazil claimed the Male Kumite -67 kg title, narrowly defeating compatriot Thulyo Araujo 8-6. Figueira, a two-time continental champion, regained the title he last held in 2021, showcasing his continued excellence in the sport.

 

Hana Furumoto-Deshaies Triumphs in -55 kg Category

Hana Furumoto-Deshaies of Canada won her first continental title in the Female Kumite -55 kg category by beating Valentina Toro of Chile 4-2. After finishing second last year, Furumoto-Deshaies finally clinched the top spot, displaying remarkable improvement and determination.

 

Juan Camilo Fernandez Takes -60 kg Crown

In the Male Kumite -60 kg category, Juan Camilo Fernandez of Colombia won his first continental crown by defeating fellow Colombian Juan Forero 8-5. Fernandez’s victory in his debut final appearance marks a significant milestone in his career.

 

Yamina Lahyanssa Defends -50 kg Title

Yamina Lahyanssa of Canada successfully defended her title in the Female Kumite -50 kg category, beating Sofia Cardenas of Colombia 8-4. Lahyanssa’s back-to-back championship wins highlight her consistency and prowess in the category.

 

The 2024 PKF Senior Championships continue to provide thrilling matches and remarkable achievements, with more action expected on the final day on Saturday. The Team and Para-Karate divisions will take the stage on the final day of competition from Punta del Este.
