The 2024 PKF Senior Karate Championships will be held this week in Punta del Este, Uruguay. Scheduled from May 23 to 26, the PKF Senior Championships will crown the new kings and queens of Karate in the Americas. The event will be even more thrilling as it will qualify the Pan American representatives to participate in the World Team Championships to be held in Pamplona, Spain later this year.
Here is all you need to know about the 2024 PKF Senior Championships.
WHAT
- The PKF Senior Championships is Karate’s first-class event in the Americas.
- The tournament reaches its 2024 edition and follows the successful events in San Jose (Costa Rica) in 2023 and Curacao in 2022.
- Nearly 400 athletes from 25 countries participated in the 2023 PKF Senior Championships in San Jose. Chile topped the medal table with 15 medals and seven golds, followed by the Unted States and Brazil.
WHERE
- The tournament takes place in the city of Punta del Este, Uruguay. One of the most important balneary cities in South America, Punta del Este is located in the Southeast of Uruguay, 130km away from the capital city of Montevideo.
- The event is held at the Centro de Convenciones in Punta del Este.
- A major powerhouse nation of the sport in the Americas, Uruguay host the event once again after successfully welcoming the tournament also in Punta del Este in 2021.
WHEN
- The event is scheduled from May 23 to 26.
- The categories of Individual Male and Female Kata, and Male Kumite -84kg and +84kg, and Female Kumite -68kg and +68g will be resolved on Thursday, May 23, with finals being held at the end of the day.
- The categories of Female Kumite -50kg, -55kg, and -61kg, and Male Kumite -60kg, -67kg, and -75kg will take the stage on Friday, May 24 with finals being held at the end of the day.
- The opening ceremony will also be held on Friday afternoon.
- The last day of the competition on Saturday, May 25 will be focused on Para-Karate and Kumite and Kata Team categories. The finals of all these categories are also scheduled at the end of the day.

WHO
- Over 300 athletes from 24 countries have registered to take part in the event.
HOW
- The tournament follows a Knockout competition system.
- All the elimination rounds of each of the categories are held back-to-back with the medal bouts being held at the end of each competition day.
WHAT ELSE
- The PKF Senior Championships will qualify representatives in team divisions to represent the Americas at the upcoming World Team Championships, scheduled to be held in Pamplona (Spain) from October 9 to 13, 2024.
