The city of Larnaca (Cyprus) hosts the second Karate 1-Series A event of the year from February 16 to 18.
Here’s all you need to know about the anticipated tournament.
WHAT
- The Karate 1-Series A Larnaca is the second event of the 2024 season. It follows the successful opening event in Athens. After Larnaca, the Karate 1-Series A will travel to Salzburg (Austria) from September 13 to 15.
- Cyprus have established their status as a hub of the sport in the region after hosting the Karate 1-Series A event in 2023 and 2024, the 2023 EKF Cadet, Junior & U21 Championships in Larnaca, and the Karate 1-Youth League events from 2019 to 2022 in Limassol.
WHERE
- The tournament will be held at the Kition Athletic Centre.
WHEN
- The event is scheduled from February 16 to 18.
- The eliminations will be held on Friday and Saturday (from 09.00 to 20.30 local times, GMT +2).
- The bronze medal bouts are scheduled for Sunday, from 11.00 to 14.30. The finals will be held on Sunday from 14.30 to 18.00

WHO
- Over 900 athletes from 83 countries have registered to participate in the event.
- This tally continues the participation records at the Karate 1-Series A tournaments, following the 892 athletes from 73 countries that took part in the opening event in Athens.
- The powerhouse nation of Italy presents the largest delegation, with 99 athletes. Leading countries of France and Ukraine also compete with a large number of competitors, 60 and 52 athletes, respectively.
- Representatives of Turkiye prevailed at the opening event in Athens with three gold medals, followed by the delegations of Japan, Iran and Portugal, all with two gold medals.
- Three-time continental championship medallist Saleh Abazari of Iran, newly proclaimed U21 continental champion Heorhii Pitsul of Ukraine, and three-time Karate 1-Series A winner Mishima Kiri of Japan were among the big winners in Athens.
HOW
- The Karate 1-Series A events are limited to competitors who are placed in positions 33 and below in the WKF World Ranking.
- Athletes are free to register as long as the total number of 96 competitors per category in Kumite and 128 entries in Kata is completed.
- The tournament follows a knockout competition system.
WHAT ELSE
- Competitors participating in the Karate 1-Series A events aim to earn points to reach the top 32 positions in the WKF World Ranking, which gives them the chance to compete in the Karate 1-Premier League.
