The opening event of the year will be held in Athens (Greece) from January 12 to 14. The season of International Karate begins with the anticipated Karate 1-Series A Athens.
Here’s all you need to know about the anticipated tournament.
WHAT
- The Karate 1-Series A Athens is the first event of the 2024 season. After Athens, the Karate 1-Series A will travel to Larnaca (Cyprus) from February 16 to 18, and Salzburg (Austria) from September 13 to 15.
- The city of Athens is fast establishing its position as a hub of major international events after welcoming a Karate 1-Series A event last year, thus hosting the tournament for two consecutive years.
WHERE
- The tournament will be held at the Ano Liosia Olympic Hall in Athens.
WHEN
- The event is scheduled from January 12 to 14
- The eliminations will be held on Friday and Saturday (from 09.00 to 20.30 local times, GMT +2).
- The bronze medal bouts are scheduled for Sunday, from 11.00 to 14.30. The finals will be held on Sunday from 14.30 to 18.00

WHO
- Over 1090 athletes from 81 countries have registered to participate in the event.
- This tally extends the participation records at the Karate 1-Series A tournaments and confirms these competitions as a showcase of the global popularity of Karate.
- The powerhouse nation of Italy presents the largest delegation, with 141 athletes. Leading countries of France and Turkiye also compete with a large number of competitors, 72 and 63 athletes, respectively.
HOW
- The Karate 1-Series A events are limited to competitors who are placed in positions 33 and below in the WKF World Ranking.
- Athletes are free to register as long as the total number of 96 competitors per category in Kumite and 128 entries in Kata is completed.
- The tournament follows a knockout competition system.
WHAT ELSE
- Competitors participating in the Karate 1-Series A events aim to earn points to reach the top 32 positions in the WKF World Ranking, which gives them the chance to compete in the Karate 1-Premier League.
